The First Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health was held in Frankfurt, Germany, 1989

This was the first time that ministers of health and of environment met in a common forum. The major policy outcome was the European Charter on Environment and Health, in which ministers:

  • agreed on the basic principles, mechanisms and priorities for environment and health programmes;
  • established the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health; and
  • agreed to hold a follow-up conference in five years.
