The risk of transmission of COVID-19 within prisons or other places of detention is likely to amplify the epidemic and swiftly increase the number of people affected.
Efforts to control COVID-19 are likely to succeed if people in prison/detention and visitors are informed in advance and understand the procedures to be adopted, why they are necessary, and how they are to be carried out. It is especially important that any potential restrictive measures are explained, and their temporary nature emphasized.
WHO has developed fact sheets on COVID-19 for people in prisons and for visitors - providing key messages about the nature of the COVID-19 infection, most common symptoms, ways of transmission, protective measures advised, including handwashing.
