Harmful use of alcohol, alcohol dependence and mental health conditions: a review of the evidence for their association and integrated treatment approaches (2019)

Harmful use of alcohol is a key risk factor for noncommunicable diseases and mental health conditions.

An evidence review was carried out to better understand the links between harmful alcohol use or dependence and mental health conditions (anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal behaviour) and opportunities for more integrated care.

The evidence suggests clear associations between harmful alcohol use or dependence and the mental health conditions studied, although the causality and nature of the associations remain unclear. Coexistence of harmful use of alcohol or dependence and mental health conditions affects the course, severity and outcomes of both disorders as well as treatment outcomes. A limited number of studies indicate beneficial effects of combined treatment approaches. Further studies are needed to find and test integrated treatment for individuals with comorbid mental health conditions and alcohol use disorders.
