Health ministers and public health leaders from the 53 countries of the WHO European Region will meet virtually on 14–15 September 2020 for a 2-day session of the WHO regional governing body. They will discuss the Region’s COVID-19 response and WHO/Europe’s 5-year strategy for health, known as the European Programme of Work 2020–2025, which includes provisions to support Member States’ pandemic recovery plans.

On the opening day of the 70th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe (RC70), WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge will report on the state of health in the world and in the European Region, including lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The following special guests will address the Committee:

  • Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium (via video address);
  • Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, WHO/Europe’s Patron;
  • Dr Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety; and
  • Professor Mario Monti, Chair of the Pan-European Commission on Health and Sustainable Development and President of Bocconi University (Italy).

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, there will be no media registration or access to UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark, in connection with the event. Instead, the materials and links listed below are available for journalists.
