Photo story – Kyrgyzstan strengthening its preparedness for operational readiness via simulation exercises

As a mountainous country, Kyrgyzstan frequently suffers from natural disasters such as earthquakes, avalanches, mudflows and landslides. On average, the country experiences 200 emergency situations every year. Severe climatic and geological threats have frequent negative effects on the population and national economy. This leads WHO to look for quick solutions to protect the population and territories from disasters and to address anticipated from threats and risks.

WHO focus is on helping the country scale up implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005), build capacity for dealing with disasters and improve preparedness for emergency by introducing and practicing various triage drills and simulation exercises. As part of its Health Emergency Programme, WHO works side by side with the national health authorities to improve the national health system’s preparedness for such crises.

Current photo story captures three main simulation exercises that were organized by WHO Country Office in Kyrgyzstan in a close cooperation with Ministry of Health and Ministry of Emergency of the country in Jalal-Abad, Issyk-Kul, and Chui regions to address strengthening preparedness for emergency situations in the country.
