Workshop on law and tobacco control in Europe: domestic, regional and international legal issues
WHO/Europe together with the Norwegian Cancer Society and La Ligue contre le cancer organized a workshop on law and tobacco control in Europe. It focused on legal issues on domestic, regional and international levels.
The workshop took place on 1–2 November 2017 at UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark. The target audience included European countries and leading nongovernmental organizations working on legal issues in tobacco control. It aimed to support legal work in tobacco control by sharing information on legal policy design and tobacco industry opposition, and on past and current legal challenges.
Threats from litigation in international trade and investment tribunals have already started to emerge in the context of tobacco as well as other risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). There is clearly a scope for closer partnership between countries to tackle NCD risk factors in the coming years.
