The notification rate of TB cases in Kosovo (1) is among the highest in south-east Europe. WHO was asked to organize a review of the Kosovo Tuberculosis Programme, which took place from 22 to 26 April 2013. The reviewers provided a number of recommendations to improve the Programme and to ensure its long-term sustainability before the end, in 2016, of support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The main focus should be on: the creation of a central management unit, adoption of standard operating procedures, provision of universal access to rapid diagnosis, ensuring of effective infection control, development of a nominal electronic database, integration with family medicine, and adoption of policies for maintaining and enhancing human resources.
