At least 40 people have died and over 1600 were injured following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in eastern Turkey, which took place at 20:55 local time on Friday, 24 January 2020. Of those injured, around 100 are undergoing treatment and the rest have already been discharged. -

A team led by Dr. Pavel Ursu, WHO Representative to Turkey, and by the Provincial Health Directorate visited the area to assess the health status and needs of the workers and their families. -

It also demands that all parties in conflicts respect the safety and neutrality of health workers and health facilities. Making health care a deliberate target is a major violation of international law that shows a tragic disregard for our common humanity. -

Photo story – WHO medical kits reach northern Syria

Ten surgical supply kits and five trauma kits have arrived in northern Syria, as part of WHO humanitarian and emergency operations. Procured with funding support from the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance, the surgical kits that crossed the border from Turkey last weekend contain medical supplies to cover 1000 emergency interventions and trauma kits to support 500 life-saving interventions. It is the second shipment of medical supplies for northern Syria this year, arranged through the WHO field presence in Gaziantep, Turkey. -
