World Health Day celebrated in Ukraine with conference on antimicrobial resistance

In celebration of World Health Day 2011 an international scientific conference on antimicrobial resistance and its global spread took place in Kyiv 7-8 April 2011. The event was hosted by the O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University. Leading Ukrainian and international scientists as well as heads of medical schools from the Russian Federation, Poland, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Lithuania, Netherlands, Croatia and many others participated in the event.

Some of the topics discussed during the two day conference were:

  • antimicrobial resistance and its global spread;
  • communicable and noncommunicable diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS;
  • trends, new challenges and threats in public health;
  • strengthening and modern development strategies of the health system;
  • public health and ecology;
  • socioeconomic determinants of health;
  • health care management; and
  • legal and ethic principles of health services.

The opening ceremony on 7 April was attended by representatives from WHO/Europe, the WHO Country Office in Ukraine, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Academies of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the Russian Federation, the parliament of Ukraine, medical schools from Moscow, St Petersburg and Warsaw as well as major medical universities of Ukraine. The event was widely covered by national and international television and radio channels, print mass media and specialized medical journals.
