Dr David Heymann (United Kingdom)
Dr Heymann graduated with a degree in medicine from Wake Forest University followed by a diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine — after which he worked for 13 years as a medical epidemiologist in Sub-Saharan Africa for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He subsequently played an active role in WHO Smallpox Eradication Programme and in the Organisation’s response to the Ebola outbreak in 1976, eventually becoming the Director of the WHO Programme on Emerging and other Communicable Diseases in 1995. In recognition of his work, he received the Heinz Award in the Human Condition category in 2007. Dr Heymann is currently the Chairman of Public Health England.
During his career, Dr Heymann has contributed to over 145 scientific articles on infectious diseases and is currently editor of the 18th edition of the Control of Communicable Diseases Manual. In 2009, Professor Heymann was appointed an honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to global public health.
Dr Heymann joined the EACHR in 2012.
