Dr James Whitworth (United kingdom)
Dr Whitworth graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1979 with a degree in medicine followed by a doctorate on the topic of epidemiology and control of onchocerciasis in Sierra Leone in 1992. He previously worked for Save the Children Fund in The Gambia, and as Professor of International Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Head of the Medical Research Council’s Programme on AIDS based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe. Dr Whitworth has been at the Wellcome Trust since 2004, initially as Head of International Activities, and subsequently as Head of Population Health since 2013. In his current role, he is responsible for strategy, policy and developing the scientific portfolio for population health research in both the UK and in low and middle income countries.
Dr Whitworth’s research has focused on communicable diseases, and his phase three studies on Ivermectin provided the rigorous basis for the control of onchocerciasis. In addition to contributing to over 250 publications, he has also been actively engaged in international health policy through his work with the WHO, NIH, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Royal College of Physicians and the Faculty of Public Health.
Dr Whitworth joined the EACHR in 2013.
