Professor Helmut Brand (Netherlands)
Professor Brand graduated with a degree in medicine followed by a doctorate from the University of Düsseldorf in 1984. He subsequently practised medicine and held positions in a number of regional Health Authorities and Ministries of Health in Germany before becoming Director of the Public Health Institute of North Rhine Westphalia. Professor Brand is now Jean Monnet Professor of European Public Health and head of the Department of International Health at Maastricht University.
His current research work focuses on the topic of european integration in health, and he has advised the European Commission on a number of health topics through his membership of the Expert Panel on “Investing in Health” (EXPH) and as head of the “Health System Working Party” of the Public Health Programme. Professor Brand has also served as Managing Director of the European Public Health Centre, President of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European region (ASPHER), Vice-President of the German Society of Social Medicine and Prevention and President of the European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG). He also sits on the editorial boards of a number of journals, including the European Journal of Public Health.
Professor Brand joined the EACHR in 2013.
