Professor Johan Mackenbach (Netherlands)
Professor Johan Mackenbach graduated in 1979 with a degree in medicine and in 1988 with a doctorate in public health from Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where he is currently Director of the Department of Public Health. He was also Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Public Health. His research, which has focused on social epidemiology, medical demography and health policy, has resulted in over 500 publications. Professor Mackenbach has also taken a lead role in co-ordinating a number of international comparative studies funded by the European Commission.
Professor Mackenbach is actively engaged in health policy and is a member of the Health Council of the Netherlands and the Council for Public Health and Health Care. He is also an honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Professor Mackenbach joined the EACHR in 2012.
