Professor Reinhard Burger (Germany)
Professor Reinhard Burger graduated with a doctorate from the Institute for Medical Microbiology at the University of Mainz, after which he worked as a Professor of Immunology at the University of Heidelberg and the Free University of Berlin. During his academic career he has worked as a visiting scientist at the National Institutes of Health, Harvard Medical School and the Wuhan University School of Medicine. In 1997 he was appointed Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and deputy Director of the Robert Koch Institute, where he is now the organisation’s President.
Professor Burger’s research covers a wide range of areas, including infectious diseases, immunology and transfusion medicine. In addition to contributing to over 170 publications, he is a member of a number of national and international expert committees, including the German Society for Immunology, the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology, the American Association of Immunologists and the American Association of Blood Banks. Professor Burger is also Chairman of the National Advisory Committee Blood of the German Federal Ministry of Health.
Dr Burger joined the EACHR in 2012.
