Professor José Pereira-Miguel (Portugal)

Professor José Pereira-Miguel graduated with a degree in medicine in 1976 and a doctorate in internal medicine in 1985 from the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Medicine, where he was Head of the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Full Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health until his retirement at the end of 2017. He was formerly Director General of Health (Chief Medical Officer) and High Commissioner of Health of Portugal.

Professor Pereira-Miguel’s work, which has resulted in over 200 publications, covers topics such cardiovascular epidemiology, preventive medicine, environmental health and migrant health. On the international level, he has represented Portugal at several WHO World Health Assemblies since and has served as an Executive Board Member from 2005–2008. He has also participated in several high-level groups and committees of the European Commission.

Professor Pereira-Miguel joined the EACHR in 2012.
