Regional-level case definition project

At a meeting scheduled for the second half of 2010, WHO/Europe will work with experts from across the WHO European Region to devise standard case definitions for chronic hepatitis B and C infections.
At present, there are no standardized case definitions for recording and reporting all cases in the Region. The differences between existing definitions have serious consequences for surveillance results and clinical management, potentially leading to underreporting of chronic infections. Weak surveillance affects the ability correctly and completely to describe the trends in hepatitis infection and national and regional disease burdens.
