Increasing access to hepatitis B vaccination for populations most at risk in Ukraine

The problem of limited access to the hepatitis B vaccination for vulnerable populations has barely been addressed in eastern countries in the European region. WHO/Europe therefore held a round-table discussion with Ukrainian stakeholders and counterparts in Kyiv on 30 September – 2 October 2009.

The WHO Country Office, Ukraine hosted the discussion; participants included representatives from the Ministry of Health, national and city AIDS centres, and hepatitis treatment services, as well as two nongovernmental organizations representing people living with HIV/AIDS and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. The group discussed barriers and challenges to increased access related to normative guidance, integration and coordination of services, and ways to address these challenges.

The outcome was a pilot project presenting two models of vaccination service delivery for populations most at risk, which national counterparts will develop and implement. The International HIV/AIDS Alliance will fund the project and WHO/Europe will provide technical support.
