Approximately 400 million people worldwide are chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), and approximately 1 million die annually of HBV-related disease.

HBV is detected in blood and body fluids and it can be transmitted either sexually or by exposure to infected blood or fluids. There are four major modes of transmission with the world’s predominant mode of HBV transmission being perinatal.
