Action plan to address viral hepatitis

In September 2016, Member States will discuss the first action plan for the health sector’s response to viral hepatitis in the WHO European Region. It will adapt the global health-sector strategy on viral hepatitis for 2016–2021 to the political, economic and epidemiological circumstances of the WHO European Region and address all five hepatitis viruses, with a particular focus on HBV and HCV.
The plan will set the ambitious goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat in the Region by 2030. This is to be achieved by reducing new infections and deaths from viral hepatitis and its complications, and ensuring equitable access to recommended preventive, testing, care and treatment services for all. It proposes priority actions for Member States, accompanied by supporting actions for WHO, in five strategic directions: information for focused action, interventions for impact, delivering for equity, financing for sustainability and innovation for acceleration.
The action plan is aligned with Health 2020, the European policy for health and well-being, and will contribute to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG target 3.3 includes a commitment to combat hepatitis.
