Partners
WHO/Europe believes it can only achieve its goals by forming and maintaining a wide range of partnerships with other organizations. Cooperation and collaboration enhance the impact of an effective and appropriate response to the HIV/AIDS epidemics in the WHO European Region. The response needs:
- to mobilize and maintain the political will to design and implement an appropriate response
- to strengthen the ability of decision-makers, both within and outside the health sector, to make rational, appropriate, effective, informed and evidence-based choices;
- to strengthen health systems and services;
- to promote the health sector’s responsibility for stewardship of the intersectoral response;
- to build partnerships with other sectors and nongovernmental organizations;
- to promote intersectoral and multilevel approaches and interventions, as well as comprehensive community-based interventions and activities;
- to integrate HIV/AIDS services into existing health care services, particularly primary health care services, and provide continuity of care;
- to decentralize and diversify services for people at risk of or living with HIV; and
- to promote high ethical principles in designing and implementing policies.
WHO/Europe works closely with national governments, civil society groups, scientific and academic institutions and networks, and other stakeholders. As one of the 10 co-sponsors of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), WHO closely coordinates its work with other United Nations agencies.
