Key points: HIV infection remains of major public health importance in Europe, with evidence of increasing transmission of HIV in several European countries. In 2007, 48 892 newly diagnosed cases of HIV infection were reported by 49 of the 53 countries in the WHO European Region and the rate of newly diagnosed infections per one million population almost doubled since 2000. 5244 cases of AIDS were reported by 48 countries and in the east the number of AIDS cases continued to increase.
