Pandemic (H1N1) 2009

During the pandemic in 2009, WHO/Europe supported all key aspects of pandemic response by its Member States (risk assessment and surveillance, clinical care of patients, deployment of antivirals and vaccines,  supply of laboratory test kits, risk communication, etc.). On 10 August 2010, WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan announced that the H1N1 influenza virus had moved into the post-pandemic period.  

Since then, WHO/Europe has organized several meetings on lessons learnt from the pandemic and helped countries implement these lessons. In 2010, WHO/Europe in collaboration with the WHO Collaborating Centre of Pandemic Influenza and Research carried out an evaluation of how pandemic preparedness efforts contributed to the response to the 2009 pandemic.
