WHO/Europe practical course on influenza virology

WHO

In order to strengthen laboratory capacities for influenza diagnosis and surveillance, the WHO Regional Office for Europe organizes regular training in influenza virology and in laboratory quality, and provides quality assurance programs. In May 2011, WHO/Europe held a laboratory training on influenza virology, together with the Research Institute of Influenza of the Ministry of Health and Social Wellbeing, St. Petersburg, Russian Federation. The Insitute is a WHO-recognized National Influenza Centre.

The specific aim of this training was to provide selected experts with comprehensive laboratory skills to culture and characterize the antigenic profile of circulating human influenza virus strains. Participants attended from national influenza laboratories in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova and Uzbekistan.

Some of the main topics addressed during the week-long training included cell cultures for isolation of influenza virus and influenza virus typing/subtyping using hemagglutination inhibition test. The agenda included both formal lectures and also focused heavily on practical sessions that involved hands-on training. The training curriculum was provided to all participants, and the outcome of the training was improved skills and knowledge for all participants.

In evaluating the training, participants provided very positive feedback in terms of the venue, trainers and overall organization.
