  • More than 340 million new cases of sexually transmitted bacterial and protozoal infections occur worldwide every year.
  • Untreated gonococcal and chlamydial infections in women result in pelvic inflammatory disease in up to 40% of cases. One in four of these results in infertility. Worldwide, untreated maternal infections account for eye infections leading to blindness in up to 4000 newborn babies every year.
  • New vaccines against human papillomavirus infection could stop the untimely deaths of about 240 000 women from cervical cancer every year in resource-poor settings.

STI data and statistics are collected annually through the WHO/United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) joint reporting form. This process covers the 53 Member States in the WHO European Region. WHO/Europe’s centralized information system for infectious diseases (CISID) presents these data online.
