Regional meeting on integrated vector management

The meeting addressed the project to demonstrate and scale up sustainable alternatives to DDT for the control of vector-borne diseases in the South Caucasus and central Asia.
The meeting was organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Green Cross and WHO/Europe, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan. The participants included officials from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan; and WHO and Green Cross staff and experts.
Its objectives were:
- to report on the burden and distribution of vector-borne diseases (VBD) in participating countries;
- to review existing practical modalities for dealing with VBD and identify problems in participating countries;
- to streamline mechanisms for effective integrated vector management (IVM) in countries (through intersectoral partnerships and collaboration at both the national and local levels, involving more partners and coordinating the activities implemented) and at the regional level (through coordination of activities implemented with partners);
- to train specialists in the main principles and methods of IVM;
- to promote cross-border cooperation and create national action plans related to IVM; and
- to stimulate the flow of additional resources for VBD control activities.
