Country work

The following countries have asked WHO/Europe for technical support related to harm reduction and preventing illicit drug use in 2010 /2011.

Albania

WHO/Europe is working closely with WHO headquarters and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on implementing a new programme on drug treatment and care in Albania. The project started with an exploratory mission in February 2010. There will be a focus on expanding opioid substitution therapy for drug-dependent people.

Croatia

WHO/Europe is providing technical assistance to develop policies to ensure follow-up of released prisoners with drug problems.

Kazakhstan

WHO/Europe is providing support for a methadone substitution therapy programme in Kazakhstan.

Kyrgyzstan

WHO/Europe is currently monitoring a pilot project on methadone substitution therapy for people in police custody and in one prison. A report will be published soon with recommendations for the future treatment of prisoners with drug dependence.

Serbia

WHO/Europe is working closely with WHO headquarters and UNODC on implementing a new programme on drug treatment and care in Serbia. The project started with an exploratory mission in February 2010. There will be a focus on expanding opioid substitution therapy for drug-dependent people.
