Gastein meeting - Increasing capacity for the prevention and control of NCDs

This meeting in Bad Gastein, Austria 2-3 October 2013, will focus on the current status of noncommunicable disease (NCD) action in eastern Europe and central Asia, and to discuss plans for the future. In addition, the WHO European Ministerial Conference on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in the Context of Health 2020 to be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on 3-4 December 2013, will be discussed.

This meeting will also explore the preliminary results of the project “Strengthening of health systems for the prevention and control of Noncommunicable Diseases in Eastern Europe and Central Asia” implemented in Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The three major components of the project are identified as follows:

  • to develop, align and strengthen national action plans and strategies on NCDs in order to be connected to global and regional policy instruments;
  • to develop capacity-building in NCDs;
  • to strengthen information systems and capacity for monitoring.

Ministers responsible for health, along with senior officials from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are expected to attend the meeting.
