Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of illness and death. Almost all Member States in the WHO European Region have ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), which has contributed to saving lives and improving global health since 2005. Yet tobacco use continues: nearly a third of adults in the Region are estimated to be smokers. The implementation of tobacco control measures has been uneven across countries and is subject to intense industry lobbying. This fact sheet provides an overview of the issues, information about the roadmap of actions, and the latest facts and figures.
