Hungarian smoking ban expected to cut the number of people treated in hospital or dying from heart attack and coronary illnesses by 10-15% within a year

The strong nationwide smoke-free law covering public spaces (including workplaces, clubs and restaurants) came into force from 1 January 2012. It will fine an instant health care penalty upon the perpetrator of up to HUF 30 000HUF (EUR 100). Failing to fulfil the obligation regarding designation of smoking areas and prohibitions on smoking results in a fine from 100,000 to 250,000 HUF for persons held liable to fulfil these obligations or between 1,000,000 and 2,500,000 HUF for institutions, organizations, operators or business associations. No penalties will be issued during a three-month period of grace.

Studies show that smoking in Hungary is annually responsible for the early death of some 30,000 people and the number of deaths related to passive smoking is more than 2,300. With about 33% of those older than 15 already smoking every day, Hungary is among the Member States with the highest smoking rates in the European Union. The government expects the ban to cut the number of people treated in hospital or dying from heart attack and coronary illnesses by 10 to 15% within a year.
