Over the last two decades, smoking by women and girls in many parts of the WHO European Region has increased, largely owing to skilful and successful marketing by the tobacco industry. It has tailored campaigns to target women and girls, and the tobacco control community needs to do the same. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) expresses alarm at the increase in women and girls’ use of tobacco. This monograph uses examples of action taken in the Region to provide countries with a guide and ideas about what action could and should be taken, in the context of the WHO FCTC’s articles and guidelines.
