WHO Report on the global tobacco epidemic
The World Health Organization is committed to providing Member States with accurate, relevant and internationally comparable information that they can use to guide the development of policy and to evaluate the impact of health policy measures. For this purpose, WHO has produced the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic that tracks the status of the tobacco epidemic and the impact of the interventions that are being implemented to stop it.
The report includes data on the following six tobacco control measures (corresponding to the MPOWER acronym):
- Monitoring tobacco use and prevention policies (prevalence of tobacco use and tracking of MPOWER)
- Protect people from tobacco use (smoke-free legislation)
- Offer help to quit tobacco use (tobacco cessation)
- Warn about the dangers of tobacco (health warnings and mass media campaigns)
- Enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS legislation)
- Raise taxes on tobacco (prices and taxes of tobacco products)
Plus some data on national tobacco control programmes, tobacco tax revenues and tobacco control expenditures.
