Manipulating scientific evidence and the media

Hundreds of studies have proved that smoking and second-hand smoke are harmful to health. Nevertheless, the tobacco industry has cast doubt on these findings by funding consultants who are interviewed by the mass media.

For example, the tobacco industry established an international network of scientific and medical consultants in the 1990s to produce evidence that the dangers of second-hand smoke were overstated. The goal was to prevent the adoption regulations requiring smoke-free spaces.
