Emergency responder training in Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine

In July 2013 WHO trained emergency responders from countries most affected by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident on radiological and chemical safety aspects of the International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005), in the framework of the International Chernobyl Research and Information Network project.

Taking stock from the Chernobyl experience, participants discussed radiological and chemical emergency prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. They also debated cross-sectoral coordination, health system surge capacity-building and health care waste management during chemical emergencies.
