Making the link between transport, health, environment and achieving the SDGs

WHO

Everyone has a role to play in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including governments, intergovernmental organizations, civil society, the private sector and people everywhere.

A new publication, entitled “Making THE (transport, health and environment) link”, presents the results of an analysis of how countries can advance the 2030 Agenda by working through the Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP).

THE PEP contributes to SDG-related efforts by offering countries a unique intersectoral policy platform, and by establishing collaborative partnerships across the 3 sectors with a focus on achieving healthy, clean, zero-emission mobility and transport for all in Europe.

WHO/Europe and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) co-lead THE PEP’s secretariat. Within WHO/Europe, the secretariat operates under the Division of Policy and Governance for Health and Well-being.

The new report highlights the strong links between the actions supported by THE PEP and many of the SDGs, in particular SDGs 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17. The report aims to inspire its audience to take advantage of existing policy commitments and cooperation platforms, such as THE PEP, to support the implementation of the SDGs.

The publication’s launch is taking place at the meeting of the extended THE PEP Bureau in Vienna, Austria, on 10–11 July 2018. The Austrian Government is hosting the meeting within the context of its current Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The event also marks the start of preparations for the Fifth High-level Meeting on Transport, Health and Environment, to be held in Vienna on 22–24 October 2019. The Bureau will discuss the intended political outcomes of the High-level Meeting. These are expected to focus on advancing active mobility as a key contributor to sustainable livelihoods, clean environments, health, safety, social inclusion, economic prosperity and the overall improvement of the quality of life of citizens in the WHO European Region.

A technical briefing, “Healthy people through environmentally sustainable urban transport: towards the Fifth High-Level Meeting on Transport, Health and Environment”, is planned for the Sixty-eighth WHO Regional Committee for Europe, which will take place in September 2018.
