Physical activity

All cities are encouraged to actively promote physical activity. Physical activity benefits the physical, social and mental health of people of all ages. Beyond the direct health benefits, increasing physical activity through an integrated programme that takes account of transport and urban planning policy can increase social interaction throughout life, provide recreation and reduce violence, urban traffic congestion and pollution.

Living an active life is more than a matter of personal choice. Multisectoral policies and initiatives are needed to create urban environments that help people to be physically active. This includes the involvement of urban planners and local governments and municipalities.
