Conference – Health and disease in prisoners in Italy: the results of a multicentre study
10 April 2015, Rome, Italy
Objectives of the conference
The aim of the conference was to present the results of the project “The state of health of prisoners in penitentiary institutions in six Italian regions: an experimental model for monitoring health status and preventing suicide attempts”. The project was carried out with funding from the National Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CCM) of the Ministry of Health and coordinated by Tuscany Region and the Regional Health Agency of Tuscany.
The project, which covered prison populations in Tuscany, Veneto, Liguria, Umbria, Lazio and the Local Health Authority of Salerno, made it possible to assess the health status of over 15 000 inmates (almost 30% of the entire population held in prison in Italy), and to implement an effective intervention to prevent suicide and self-harm in some detention facilities. During the conference a publication was also distributed with all the most relevant results of the project.
