The health of prisoners in Italy: the results of a multicentre study
This publication is the result of the first epidemiological survey on the state of health of a sample of prisoners in the detention facilities of Tuscany, Lazio, Umbria, Veneto, Liguria and the Salerno Local Health Authority. The survey was funded by the Ministry of Health, as part of the planning of the National Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CCM).
This study, supported by Tuscany Region as the leader and the Regional Health Agency of Tuscany as a scientific adviser, had the specific objective of providing a detailed picture of the health needs of over 15 000 prisoners (enrolled in 2014) detained in 57 institutions (almost 30% of the total national institutions) and the pharmacological treatments prescribed for them.
The project also assessed a specific suicide risk prevention intervention in a sample of prisoners from the six regions involved, and in this document an extensive summary of the results is presented.
