The European Union allocates Structural Funds as part of its regional policy, to reduce regional disparities of income, wealth and opportunities. This briefing explores how Structural Funds can contribute to the reduction of health inequities in the European Union and the potential role of health systems and public health infrastructures.
It describes the opportunities for health systems to influence the use of Structural Funds to reduce health inequities; identifies the challenges in using Structural Funds to reduce health inequities; and explores the potential action areas in which health system stakeholders can increase their capacity and competency to engage in Structural Fund processes. The briefing draws on a range of policy guidance documents, evidence, resources and experiences to inform its analysis.
