Antimicrobial resistance

Addressing the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires a One Health approach. Antimicrobials used to treat various infectious diseases in animals may be the same or similar to those used for humans. Resistant bacteria arising in humans, animals or the environment may spread from one to the other and from one country to another.

WHO provides strategic direction and support to Member States in:

  • delivering innovative and effective responses to AMR;
  • developing intersectoral and multidisciplinary policies for the prevention, detection and management of AMR;
  • developing and supporting the implementation of national One Health AMR Action Plans;
  • implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs, and supporting the establishment of national reference laboratories; and
  • strengthening the integrated surveillance of AMR.
