The new WHO/Europe factsheet, “Alcohol and cancer in the WHO European Region: an appeal for better prevention”, emphasizes causal links between alcohol use and a range of cancers, including some of the most common types, such as female breast cancer and colorectal cancer. It also makes clear that alcohol-attributable cancers and deaths can be reduced through implementation of cost-effective policies, such as increasing taxes on alcoholic beverages and restricting marketing and availability of alcohol.

Nurses administer most cervical cancer screening in England 04-02-2020
“The screening programme is set up to be delivered by primary care in England, and although general practitioners can conduct cervical screening and do so on occasions, this is not the best use of a doctor’s time. There are not enough general practitioner doctors to conduct all the cervical screening tests and this would not be an efficient way to work,” said Ms Ruth Stubbs, Cervical Screening Programme Manager for Public Health England.

WHO urges stronger action to reduce deaths from noncommunicable diseases in Europe by one third 09-04-2019
WHO “best buys” – targeted policy interventions aimed at reducing the burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) – can be a game-changer for achieving target 3.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through which governments have committed to reducing premature deaths from NCDs by one third by 2030. The interventions range from policies that promote physical activity and curb tobacco and alcohol consumption, to reducing salt and sugar and eliminating trans-fats in food. The actions countries can take to achieve the target will be in focus at the WHO European High-level Conference on Noncommunicable Diseases taking place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on 9–10 April 2019.

Tackling air pollution is a key factor in reducing premature mortality. Indeed, air pollution was included as a fifth risk factor for NCDs at the United Nations High-level Meeting on NCDs in September 2018. WHO highlights link between alcohol and cancer at the European Parliament 12-12-2017
As part of the 5th Awareness Week on Alcohol Related Harm, WHO raised awareness on the close link between alcohol and cancer at the European Parliament. On 23 November 2017, Dr Marilys Corbex, Senior Technical Officer in the Division of Noncommunicable Diseases and Promoting Health through the Life-course at WHO/Europe, explained to an audience composed of members of parliament, health attachés and representatives of civil society that “the link between alcohol and cancer is often overlooked. With 1 in 8 alcohol-related deaths in the WHO European Region due to cancer, limiting the availability of alcoholic beverages can have a marked effect on cancer death rates.”

Transforming primary care services in Kazakhstan 01-09-2017
Kazakhstan is on track to achieve the global target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from NCDs by 2025. Currently, however, it has one of the highest rates of premature mortality in the WHO European Region. In 2013, the main causes of years of life lost due to premature death in Kazakhstan were ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and self-harm. Dietary risks, high systolic blood pressure and high body mass index are the highest ranked risk factors for disease burden, measured in disability-adjusted life years.

Joint WHO–IAEA mission to improve cancer control in Kazakhstan 20-01-2017
The country visit took place on 12–19 November 2016. Guided by professionals from the Kazakh Institute of Oncology and Radiology, 10 international experts – one of the largest WHO–IAEA teams ever assembled – visited Kazakh facilities and met professionals from Almaty, Astana, Aktobe and Karaganda. Every year, 16 million people die prematurely – before the age of 70 – of heart and lung diseases, a stroke, cancer or diabetes, according to the “Global Status Report on noncommunicable diseases 2014”, released by WHO today. A new study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO’s specialized cancer agency, shows that overweight and obesity are a major risk factor for cancer: responsible for an estimated 3.6% (481 000) of all new cancer cases globally in 2012. In most countries in the WHO European Region, the percentage of new cases that can be attributed to overweight and obesity is higher than this global rate.

Where data are available, the profiles estimate for each country the current burden of and recent trends in NCD mortality, the prevalence of selected major risk factors and the national health system’s capacity to respond. Asbestos is one of the most severe and widespread environmental health hazards in the WHO European Region, and is responsible for half of fatal cancers linked to exposure at work. Alcohol consumption in Europe decreasing but still the highest in the world 12-05-2014
People in the WHO European Region drink almost twice the world average amount of alcohol, the latest WHO figures show. According to a new report, Global status report on alcohol and health 2014, consumption in Europe fell by 10%, from 12.2 L pure alcohol per capita in 2003–2005 to 10.9 L in 2008–2010. Nevertheless, Europe still has the highest alcohol consumption in the world. In response, some Member States are implementing effective policy measures identified by WHO, such as restricting access to retailed alcohol, raising taxes on alcohol and enforcing bans on alcohol advertising.
Smoke-free: 2014 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships in Minsk 30-04-2014
The city of Minsk, Belarus, will be the host of the next Men's World Ice Hockey Championships on 9-25 May. The agreement to make the Championships smoke-free was achieved during the meeting of Mr Mikhail Myasnikovich, Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus with Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, Regional Director, WHO Regional Office for Europe, in November 2013.

Almost 600 000 deaths due to air pollution in Europe: new WHO global report 25-03-2014
Exposure to air pollution accounted for 7 million deaths worldwide in 2012, including almost 600 000 in the WHO European Region. This is the main finding of a new WHO report, released today, on the burden of disease related to ambient (outdoor) and household (indoor) air pollution. Specifically, 482 000 deaths are attributable to ambient air pollution and 117 200 deaths to household air pollution in the WHO European Region. While deaths from ambient air pollution occur in all European countries regardless of their income, those from household air pollution are over 5 times greater in low- and middle-income countries than wealthier ones.

Outdoor air pollution a leading environmental cause of cancer deaths 17-10-2013
WHO’s specialized cancer agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), announced today that it has classified outdoor air pollution and one of its major components, particulate matter (PM), as carcinogenic to human beings. After thoroughly reviewing the latest available scientific literature, the world’s leading experts, convened by IARC, concluded that sufficient evidence shows that exposure to outdoor air pollution and PM causes lung cancer. They also noted a positive association between such pollution and an increased risk of bladder cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer. It is a highly contagious infection that is transmitted through sexual or skin-to-skin contact. Over three quarters of sexually active women get it at some point in their lives. There are over 100 types of HPV, but 2 – types 16 and 18 – cause 70% of cancers. The HPV vaccine is almost 100% effective in preventing the persistent HPV infections that cause cervical cancer.

Nationwide radio programme in Tajikistan calls for public action to prevent cancer 14-02-2012
To increase public awareness of cancer prevention and treatment, the WHO Country Office, Tajikistan, organized a special radio programme on World Cancer Day, 4 February. The programme, which featured an informative discussion between an oncologist and the WHO Representative in Tajikistan, was broadcast on the nationwide radio channel Sadoi Dushanbe, encouraging people to take action to stay healthy – such as by quitting smoking and increasing physical activity.

The evidence shows that tobacco legislation is working. Confounding its early critics, it is already saving lives and improving health across the WHO European Region. Studies from countries that enforce bans on smoking in public places are finding reductions in heart attacks. Exposure to tobacco smoke contributes to cardiovascular diseases, cancer and tuberculosis, and the scientific literature indicates that, just a few months after the implementation of smoke-free laws, the hospitalization rates for myocardial infarctions decrease by 20–40%.
