Uzbekistan spreads WHO global call to “Beat diabetes” on World Health Day

The WHO Country Office, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, held a joint press conference to mark World Health Day 2016. The main aim of this media event was to raise awareness about the disease, with which more than 60 million people in the European Region live, and to highlight the most effective ways to prevent, diagnose and treat it.

The main emphasis of the press conference was placed on the best ways to prevent and fight this disease through simple actions, in keeping with the day's slogan: "Eat healthy – Be active – Follow medical advice – Beat diabetes".

At the press conference, Dr Saidganikhoja Ibragimov, Chief Endocrinologist of Uzbekistan, discussed the main achievements, challenges and issues the country faces in fighting diabetes. Dr Elena Tsoyi from the WHO Country Office explained the global situation and WHO recommendations on preventing diabetes. In addition, health specialists, diabetic patients and representatives of local nongovernmental organizations took part in the discussions.

Prior to the press conference, Mr Asilbek Khudoyarov, First Deputy Minister of Health of Uzbekistan, and Dr Ogtay Gozalov, acting WHO Representative to Uzbekistan, kicked off a campaign on measuring blood glucose levels and body-mass index, organized for the event's participants.
