Award for achievements in international health policy given to Dr Svetlana Axelrod by President of the Russian Federation

Dr Svetlana Axelrod, Coordinator of Integrated Country Support Programmes at the WHO European Office for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD Office) in Moscow, Russian Federation, received an award for achievements in international health policy from Mr Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.

During his appreciation speech, Dr Igor Kagramanyan, First Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, said: “During her work at the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation for more than 10 years, Dr Axelrod led numerous crucial projects of the Russian Federation in the field of international health. She contributed greatly to the development of bilateral relations between the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and key global health organizations, including WHO.”

Dr Kagramanyan went on to describe Dr Axelrod’s support for the process of including the prevention and control of NCDs in the international agenda of the Russian Federation. He also pointed out that she played a key role in the establishment of the NCD Office.

Dr Axelrod acknowledged that this award reflects the work of the whole WHO European Region as well as the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. She thanked the team of the NCD Office for their support in this.

About the NCD Office

The NCD Office in Moscow, Russian Federation, spearheads WHO’s work on strengthening national capacity in all 53 countries in the Region to prevent and control NCDs, promote an intersectoral approach and develop policies to tackle NCDs. The establishment of the NCD Office marked an important milestone in the Russian Federation’s commitment, made in September 2012, to combat NCDs in the Region.
