Regional technical consultation on NCD surveillance, monitoring and evaluation

In response to paragraphs 61 and 62 of the Political Declaration of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs), WHO developed a discussion paper which was published on 20 December 2011, outlining a comprehensive global monitoring framework and the technical background for developing a set of voluntary targets for the prevention and control of NCDs, for consideration by Member States.
As part of this process, the different WHO Regional Offices are considering the implications of the targets and monitoring framework for their own regions, taking account of their specificities and diversity, as well as their existing commitments and progress to date on NCDs. For this reason, WHO/Europe invited the NCD Counterparts in the Region to take part in the Regional Technical Consultation on NCD Surveillance, Monitoring and Evaluation, on 9-10 February 2012 in Oslo, kindly hosted by the Norwegian Directorate of Health.
The in-depth discussion on the proposed targets and indicators has enriched the Member States' input for the web-based consultation on the Global Monitoring Framework being conducted by WHO until the end of February 2012.
In addition to informing the country consultation process, the Consultation discussed regional perspectives relevant for monitoring and evaluation of the European strategy for the Action Plan for implementation of the European Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2012–2016 and Health 2020. There were also opportunities to share country and international experience on surveillance, consider integrating the social determinants of health and identify the needs of Member States in this field.
