High-level consultation on preventing reintroduction of malaria in the WHO European Region
21–22 July 2016, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan
On 20 April 2016, WHO announced that the European Region was the first in the world to achieve interruption of indigenous malaria transmission. For the first time, European countries at risk of malaria reintroduction will come together to protect this achievement.
As importation from countries where malaria is endemic may lead to a resumption of local transmission, constant vigilance and strong political and financial commitment are required to maintain the Region's malaria-free status. Participants in the consultation will report their achievements in malaria elimination and reaffirm their countries' commitment to prevent the re-establishment of the disease.
Fifty participants from countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan), experts from WHO headquarters and the regional offices for Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, and representatives of partner organizations will attend the event.
