Copenhagen and Geneva, 27 January 2015

WHO’s Executive Board, currently holding its 136th session in Geneva, has appointed Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, for a second term. This follows her nomination in September last year by the Regional Committee for Europe, which comprises the health ministers of the Region’s 53 Member States. Dr Jakab will start her new five-year term in February 2015.

“In my second mandate, I will give priority to linking health to sustainable development in order to ensure greater equity in health in the European Region. It’s not only about making health better; it’s about ensuring more equitable and sustainable health for Europe,” said Dr Jakab.

A native of Hungary, she has held a number of high-profile national and international public health policy positions in the past three decades. Dr Jakab holds a PhD degree in Health Sciences from the University of Debrecen, Hungary; a Master’s degree from the Faculty of Humanities, Eötvös Lóránd University, Budapest; a postgraduate degree from the University of Political Sciences, Budapest; a diploma in public health from the Nordic School of Public Health, Gothenburg, Sweden; and a postgraduate diploma from the National Institute of Public Administration and Management, Hungary.
