Ten years to transform our world: accelerating progress on sustainable development in Ukraine

WHO

With only 10 years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ukraine is accelerating its national dialogue on reaching the ambitious targets.

To facilitate this and foster the country’s progress towards health and health-related SDGs, WHO brought together various stakeholders and partners for a series of 4 webinars on key issues surrounding sustainable development. During the discussions, participants focused on the targets and indicators, as well as challenges and solutions related to the adaptation and monitoring of health-related SDGs in Ukraine.

WHO also presented the results of the report “Towards a healthier Ukraine: progress on the health-related Sustainable Development Goals 2020”. The report highlights the efforts and progress of Ukraine on the SDGs 3+ implementation path, and provides policy recommendations to accelerate the attainment of health-related SDGs by 2030.

Game-changing solutions

“Health and well-being are high on the sustainable development agenda, and have a central place in SDG targets and indicators,” said Dr Jarno Habicht, WHO Representative and Head of the WHO Country Office in Ukraine.

“In Ukraine, WHO works closely with national and international stakeholders to accelerate progress towards health-related SDG achievement while improving access to high-quality health services for Ukrainian people, increasing their financial protection and ensuring that no one is left behind.”

The urgency of this decade demands that all sectors of society ramp up participation and cooperation for game-changing solutions to address inequalities and ensure health and well-being for all.

Participants in the webinar series included representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Eurostat, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Office of the Prime Minister of Finland, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the United Nations in Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan, and WHO.

Leveraging partnerships

As part of the WHO Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All, WHO works closely with the Government of Ukraine and national and international partners, including the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS); the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women); the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); Unitaid; and the World Bank.

This work is carried out within the framework of the biennial collaborative agreement between WHO/Europe and the Government of Ukraine, and is aligned with the European Programme of Work 2020–2025 – “United Action for Better Health in Europe” (EPW). The EPW aims to achieve better health outcomes for people while accelerating progress towards the SDGs and ensuring no one is left behind.
