Progress and challenges towards achieving the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis in Europe and Central Asia (21-23 April 2015)

The global community is now firmly committed to eliminating mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV and congenital syphilis (CS) as public health problems. 

To accelerate progress, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) regional offices, along with key partners, convened joint technical consultation on 21-23 April 2015 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The consultation:

  • reviewed the achievements, barriers and next steps needed for the region and the individual countries; 
  • endorsed the regional targets for EMTCT and the elimination validation tools for data monitoring, laboratory and human rights; and 
  • committed to working together to share best practices and achieve ending mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) in the region.
