30 countries have reported influenza A(H1N1): cases in Europe rise

Since the update of 5 June, Ukraine has reported a new laboratory-confirmed case of influenza A(H1N1). As of 22:00 GMT on 11 June, 30 of the 53 countries in the WHO European Region had reported a total of 1803 cases to WHO/Europe. The number of reported cases increased by 89% from 5 to 11 June. On 11 June, WHO raised the level of influenza A(H1N1) pandemic alert to phase 6. The pandemic is characterized as of moderate severity.

The breakdown of laboratory-confirmed cases in the European Region is: Austria (7), Belgium (14), Bulgaria (2), Cyprus (1), the Czech Republic (4), Denmark (11), Estonia (4), Finland (4), France [1] (73), Germany (95), Greece (7), Hungary (4), Iceland (4), Ireland (12), Israel (68), Italy (56), Luxembourg (1), the Netherlands (35), Norway (13), Poland (7), Portugal (2), Romania (11), Russian Federation (3), Slovakia (3), Spain (488), Sweden (19), Switzerland (20), Turkey (10), Ukraine (1), and the United Kingdom [2] (824).

Of the countries that had reported cases of influenza A(H1N1) by 5 June, most reported further cases this week. Cases significantly increased in Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.
