Nearly 10 000 confirmed cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in the European Region

36 of the 53 Member States in the WHO European Region had reported a total of 9967 confirmed cases, including four fatal ones, of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection to WHO/Europe as of 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), on 2 July. Since the update of 26 June, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Lithuania have reported their first cases.

The breakdown of laboratory-confirmed cases in the European Region is: Austria (15), Belgium (49), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1), Bulgaria (10), Cyprus (58), the Czech Republic (10), Denmark (57), Estonia (13), Finland (39), France (298)[a], Germany (429), Greece (97), Hungary (11), Iceland (4), Ireland (49), Israel (542), Italy (130), Latvia (1), Lithuania (1), Luxembourg (4), Montenegro (9), the Netherlands (130)[b], Norway (41)[c], Poland (19), Portugal (19), Romania (36), the Russian Federation (3), Serbia (13), Slovakia (14), Slovenia (4), Spain (756, including 1 death), Sweden (73), Switzerland (65), Turkey (37), Ukraine (1) and the United Kingdom (6929, including 3 deaths)[d].

Sine the update of 26 June (less than a week ago), the number of reported cases rose by 73%, almost doubling in the United Kingdom, and continuing to rise in France, Germany, Israel and Spain. The first case of identified resistance to oseltamivir has been reported in Denmark.
