Over 2500 confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1) in Europe

As of 06:00 GMT on 16 June, 30 of the 53 Member States in the WHO European Region had reported a total of 2572 cases of influenza A(H1N1) to WHO/Europe. On 14 June 2009, the United Kingdom confirmed the first fatal case of influenza A(H1N1) in Europe, also the first outside the Americas. A woman diagnosed with influenza A(H1N1) virus infection, and with underlying health conditions, died in hospital in Scotland, United Kingdom. The vast majority of individuals with the virus have presented with mild illness.

The breakdown of laboratory-confirmed cases in the European Region is: Austria (7), Belgium (19), Bulgaria (2), Cyprus (1), the Czech Republic (4), Denmark (12), Estonia (4), Finland (4), France [1] (73), Germany (172), Greece (20), Hungary (4), Iceland (4), Ireland (12), Israel (131), Italy (67), Luxembourg (2), the Netherlands (61), Norway (13), Poland (7), Portugal (3), Romania (16), Russian Federation (3), Slovakia (3), Spain (499), Sweden (33), Switzerland (26), Turkey (16), Ukraine (1), and the United Kingdom [2] (1320).

Of the countries that had reported cases of influenza A(H1N1) by 11 June, most reported further cases this week. Cases significantly increased in Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
